Tropical Skin vs Temperate Skin: Why Indonesian Skin Needs Its Own Formulation Approach

Indonesia is a tropical country characterized by consistently high temperatures averaging around 26–28°C, humidity levels ranging from 70 to 90%, and a persistently high UV index throughout the year. The average UV index in Jakarta sits between 8 and 11 — far exceeding London’s average of just 3 to 5. This difference is not merely numerical; it reflects how much more ultraviolet energy strikes the skin every single day, all year round, without a winter season to offer any reprieve.

These conditions directly influence the skin in three key ways:

  1. High Humidity and Sebum Production

    High ambient humidity affects the skin’s surface hydration, which in turn can cause sebum production to increase and even become excessive. Sebum is naturally important for maintaining skin moisture and protecting against external factors. However, when produced in excess, it can lead to enlarged pores and acne.

  2. High Temperatures Affect Sebum Viscosity

    Elevated skin temperature generally lowers the viscosity of sebum, making it more fluid and causing it to spread more easily across the skin’s surface. This can contribute to a more visibly oily complexion, the appearance of enlarged pores, and a higher likelihood of acne breakouts.

  3. High UV Index Increases Skin Microbiome Levels

    UV exposure does not only affect skin cells directly — it also impacts the composition of the skin’s microbiome. Research has shown that high UV indices can influence the growth, quality, and diversity of microorganisms living on the skin, which may ultimately contribute to the development of certain skin conditions.

Indonesian Skin — What’s Different?

The majority of Indonesians have a medium-to-dark skin tone, generally falling within Fitzpatrick Type IV. At this skin type, melanocytes produce greater amounts of dark pigment, providing a degree of natural UV protection. In fact, Fitzpatrick Type IV skin offers a natural protection factor equivalent to approximately SPF 13.4, compared to just SPF 3.3 for skin types I through III. This means the risk of sunburn and skin cancer is relatively lower for most Indonesians.

However, this natural protection comes with its own trade-off: a persistently high risk of hyperpigmentation. A study published in the journal Skin Research and Technology on the facial skin characteristics of women in Jakarta found that the prevalence of Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) — dark spots that develop as a result of skin inflammation — was already notably high among younger age groups between 20 and 30 years old.

People living in tropical climates like Indonesia also tend to have oilier skin. The combination of high temperatures, elevated humidity, and hormonal stimulation can give rise to a wide range of skin concerns. In general, Indonesian skin is particularly prone to pigmentation issues, a dull complexion, and surface dryness.

The Problem with Eurocentric Testing Standards

Dermatological studies remain limited in scope and have historically focused predominantly on subjects of European descent. This raises an important question: why does clinical research on people with darker or more pigmented skin remain so underrepresented? Darker skin differs substantially from lighter skin in terms of biology, structure, and function — and findings from studies conducted on lighter-skinned subjects cannot always be directly applied to darker skin types.

This gap in research creates real challenges for clinicians, researchers, and patients alike when they encounter specific skin concerns for which no relevant clinical evidence yet exists.

Doing so would enable the development of more relevant testing standards and clinical benchmarks, ultimately resulting in cosmetic products that meaningfully address the real skin concerns of Indonesian consumers.
