International Women’s Month: Liway Movie Screening

March 19, 2025 —In celebration of International Women’s Day and the Philippines International Women’s Month, the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in Indonesia hosted a screening of the award-winning indie Filipino film Liway on Wednesday, 19 March 2025. The event, held at the Indonesia International Institute for Life Sciences (i3L), East Jakarta, was moderated by Ms. Alisha Triana Meswari Nasier, Head of the i3L International Office. Attendees included students, lecturers, the Filipino Community, and members of the Diplomatic Community in Indonesia, all gathered to honor the strength and resilience of women. The event began with an uplifting speech from i3L Rector, Ms. Katherine ST., PhD, followed by remarks from Mr. Gonaranao Musor, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines.

Directed by Kip Oebanda, Liway is a deeply moving film based on a true story, depicting the life of a young mother who uses storytelling to shield her child from the harsh realities of growing up in prison. Set during the period of Martial Law in the Philippines, the film follows the journey of a woman, known as Commander Liway, who was once a revolutionary fighter but is forced to confront the difficulties of incarceration while raising her son behind bars. Through the power of imagination and narrative, she creates a world of hope and resilience, protecting her child from the painful truths of their reality.

The Philippine Embassy encouraged the students, community, and international guests to take part in this meaningful event, not only to appreciate the cinematic excellence of Liway but also to reflect on the sacrifices and contributions of women throughout history.
