Unlocking the Potential of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Modern Healthcare
Saturday, 18th December 2024 – i3L had the pleasure of hosting a seminar titled “Unlocking the Potential of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Healthcare.” This event was a collaboration between i3L, Institut Nalanda, and Jiangxi University of Chinese Medicine. Together, we aimed to introduce the Indonesian community to the profound benefits and modern applications of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
Instead of focusing solely on traditional methods, the discussion centered on how TCM can complement contemporary medical practices. This integration presents new opportunities for tackling health challenges and improving patient outcomes.
Insights from Jiangxi University of Chinese Medicine
The seminar featured two esteemed experts from Jiangxi University of Chinese Medicine, each offering valuable insights into the application of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in modern healthcare. Prof. He Dan, an Associate Professor and Vice Director, presented a detailed session on the “Application of Traditional Chinese Medicine’s Four Methods in Gynecological Diagnosis.” She explained how TCM integrates four main diagnostic methods—inspection, listening and smelling, inquiry, and palpation—to assess and treat gynecological conditions. Prof. He emphasized how these traditional techniques align with modern medical practices in diagnosing women’s reproductive health issues, offering holistic and individualized treatment options. Her presentation provided attendees with practical knowledge on applying these methods in clinical settings, showcasing their importance in supporting women’s health.
Meanwhile, Prof. Liu Fushui, the Director of Acupotomy and Chiropractics, introduced the innovative practice of Acupotomy in his talk “A Brief Introduction to Acupotomy Medicine and Its Dominant Diseases.” Acupotomy is a unique TCM technique that combines acupuncture with minimally invasive surgical procedures, aiming to treat conditions that are difficult to address with traditional acupuncture alone. Prof. Liu explained how Acupotomy can be applied to manage a wide range of diseases, from musculoskeletal issues to chronic pain, by targeting specific acupuncture points with precision. He discussed the benefits of this technique in improving patient outcomes, particularly for those seeking less invasive treatment options while still addressing the root causes of their ailments.
Both speakers highlighted how TCM can bridge traditional healing with modern medicine. Their presentations showed that TCM methods are not only relevant today but can also complement conventional healthcare, offering more holistic treatment options. The session sparked engaging discussions on integrating TCM with modern practices, encouraging healthcare professionals to explore these approaches alongside traditional treatments.

Bridging Traditional and Modern Healthcare
The seminar attracted a diverse audience, including healthcare professionals, academics, students, and TCM enthusiasts, all eager to learn about how traditional knowledge can intersect with modern medicine. Attendees were encouraged to engage with the speakers, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas.
“This event marks a significant milestone in connecting traditional wisdom with innovative healthcare solutions. By delving into the potential of Traditional Chinese Medicine, we open doors to creative approaches that could transform global healthcare,” said our Rector, Katherine, S.T., Ph.D.
Shaping the Future of Holistic Healthcare
At i3L, we are committed to facilitating knowledge-sharing initiatives that blend tradition with innovation. This seminar underscored the enduring value of TCM while encouraging dialogue on its integration with contemporary healthcare.
As we continue to explore new perspectives and collaborations, i3L remains dedicated to contributing to a more inclusive and holistic healthcare landscape for Indonesia and beyond. We look forward to organizing future events that inspire fresh ideas and foster meaningful partnerships.

“i3L’s strong partnerships in academia and industrial research are highly valuable, opening many doors for internships, placements, and training for students. These opportunities help develop research skills as an undergraduate, which I have personally experienced. I am grateful to be a recipient of i3L’s full scholarship for four years, allowing me to focus on my studies and enjoy my time at i3L. It is no overstatement that i3L has significantly contributed to nurturing my interest in life sciences, research, and my decision to continue my studies now.”
