Sunyi Coffee: More than Just a Cup of Coffee, Fostering Social Change

Sunyi Coffee, led by CEO Mario, has a strong vision for empowering people with disabilities in Indonesia. In a recent interview, Mario discusses Sunyi Coffee’s unique concept, which aims to equalize people with disabilities and change the stigma against them.

Sunyi Coffee’s social business concept is not just about making a profit but more about providing opportunities, education, and changing society’s perception of disability. Sunyi Coffee demonstrates that the true measure of business success is not only profit, but also its social impact.

Providing Opportunities and Changing Mindsets

According to Mario, discrimination against disability in Indonesia is still very real. Limited job opportunities and unequal education are big challenges for people with disabilities. Sunyi Coffee is here to give them job opportunities and educate the public that the stigma is wrong. ‘We have the same abilities, and our mindset is wrong if we think we are better than them,’ Mario explains.

Through Sunyi Coffee, Mario not only sells coffee but also builds awareness of the importance of solving social problems, such as the gap between disabled and non-disabled people. He practices that social entrepreneurship is not just about profit but how we make a sustainable positive impact on society and the environment.

Social Entrepreneur: Making a Profit While Making an Impact

Mario also emphasizes that Sunyi Coffee is a social entrepreneur business, not a social foundation. ‘We still have to make a profit, but while balancing it with our social mission,’ he said. Coffee, as part of a lifestyle, is considered a business that will continue to grow, but Mario is always ready to innovate if trends change.

Overseas, the concept of social entrepreneurship has become commonplace, while in Indonesia, it is still considered something special. Sunyi Coffee wants to be an example that people with disabilities are also equal to the general public. Sunyi Coffee’s main focus is to solve the gap between disabled and non-disabled people and then make a profit from the sales.

Sustainability and Long-term Impact

As a business, Sunyi Coffee also faces challenges in terms of budget and time. However, according to Mario, sustainability is key. ‘Part of our profits should be donated to address social and environmental issues,’ says Mario. By focusing on more than just profit, Sunyi Coffee seeks to create a more sustainable business.

Mental Recession: Back to Basics

Mario also touched on the current mental recession, where people focus too much on technology and forget about social issues. ‘It’s time to go back to the basics,’ he said. According to him, businesses in the future must have an impact on the environment or society, and human relationships must be maintained.

In facing an era of recession, not only in terms of the economy but also in terms of mental and social recession, Sunyi Coffee invites us to return to our basic values. Business is not just about technology or profit, but also about how we can have a positive impact on the environment and society around us. The emphasis on social issues will be stronger in the future, where business success will be measured not only by profit, but also by the social contributions made.

With dedication and passion, Sunyi Coffee and Mario not only run a business but also inspire others to focus on sustainable social contribution. Businesses that positively impact society and the environment will have stronger staying power and build closer relationships between people. So, don’t be afraid to fail, but focus on making a positive impact through our businesses and contributing to building a better life for all.
