In celebration of World Book Day, the Community Outreach Division along with their committees, visited Yayasan Pa van der Steur, Bekasi, Jawa Barat, on the 27th of April 2024. This is a newly established program that aims to teach and increase awareness of literacy to Indonesian children, which also fulfills the 4th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of Quality Education. There were many children participating in this program and they all showed big smiles throughout the day!
There were fun educational activities held in the form of post-to-post games, with a total of 4 posts. Starting off with the reading and writing activity where the children had to either read or write a story, followed by a spelling bee where children had to spell some words, a drama in which they had to act out a short piece of the story, and lastly a story-telling activity. Then, they had lunch, ate snacks together, and had many other lively activities.
After a long day of learning and having fun, it was time to depart. However, before that, the Literacy Day committee managed to donate 1031 children’s books that they had been collecting from i3L students a few weeks prior to the day of the event! Afterwards, a photo session was held and we were all surprised by an amazing performance by the children! They beautifully sang a song while being accompanied by a guitar. Overall, it was a heart-touching event, seeing all the smiles and excitement of the children and hopefully, this program can grow the interest of children in learning Indonesia’s literature.
