What is food waste?

Food waste is a major global issue that threatens food security and causes environmental harm. In Indonesia, food waste has become a pressing concern. In fact, a report by Bappenas shows that Indonesia ranks among the top food-wasting nations, with 23 – 48 million tons of food wasted each year between 2000 and 2019. From farms to dinner tables, food is lost at every step, whether during production, distribution, or in our own homes.

Food waste happens partly due to limited access to proper storage methods, causing food to spoil faster. Another reason is the lack
of awareness about food waste. Many people have come to accept it as part of life and are quick to throw away items that don’t look perfect–think
wonky carrots! As food became easier to get, it started to feel less valuable, leading to over-buying and eating more than we needed.

But wait, there’s more! Food waste doesn’t just disappear–it creates a ripple effect that impacts the environment, economy, and society as a whole:

● Environmental: Decomposing food in landfills releases methane, a greenhouse gas that decreases air quality and cause climate change.
● Economic: Food waste costs Indonesia billions yearly, impacting farmers, retailers, and the economy through production and storage losses.
● Society: While food is wasted, millions of people in Indonesia still face hunger.

Reducing food waste can be easy and fun with a few simple habits! Here are some great tips to get started:

1. Plan meals and make a shopping list to avoid buying things we don’t need
2. Store food properly in an airtight container or fridge to extend freshness
3. Know the difference between “best before” and “use by” dates
4. Donate extra food to food banks or farmers
5. Turn food waste into biogas
Food waste is a serious problem we can all help fix. By being careful with how we
buy, store, and use food, we can reduce waste and protect the planet.

Together, we can cut food waste, promote sustainability, and protect the earth
