Have you ever noticed how much trash is sitting on the street every day you are on your way to campus? Not only do there pieces of trash present an undesirable could very well end up blocking water passages in the sewer system. Well, SCi’s Community Outreach Division had taken notice of this matter and had decided to hold i3L Cleanup Day to pick up trash in areas surrounding the i3L campus in hopes of reducing the amount of trash on nearby streets.
Just a few weeks ago, on 2 March 2024, 55 volunteers alongside 28 committee members participated in i3L Cleanup Day. The event began with a briefing session for the volunteers to divide themselves into six groups as well as announce the routes each group will cover. After equipping themselves with the proper tools, all groups were given 90 minutes to complete their cleaning route. At the end of the day, a total of 83 kg of trash, consisting of organic, inorganic, hazardous, and recyclable waste, was collected.
Despite the event only lasting for a day, we would like to remind and encourage everyone to be more mindful of the waste found in their surroundings, as it coincides with multiple Sustainable Development Goals, including but not limited to Clean Water and Sanitation, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Life Below Water, and Life on Land. Let’s foster the habit of keeping our surroundings clean by picking up and responsibly disposing of any trash we see wherever we go.
