Cohort 2024’s First Event Hits with a Bang!

By Kimi Mackenzie Wibowo (BM ‘22)

Jakarta, 11th October 2024 – The new cohort successfully kicked off their first event together, “Gathering Night 2024,” on Friday, 11 October 2024, and what a night it was! Barely two months into their journey, these fresh faces wowed everyone with their creativity. Laughter and conversations filled the air as students mingled, breaking the ice over food and friendly banter.

Everything seemed picture-perfect—until a body plummeted from the second floor! But don’t worry—it was all part of the plan. What followed was a whirlwind of suspense as the entire room plunged into chaos. Suddenly, participants were caught up in a murder mystery!

The main game, named “The Bloody Affair,” introduced a gruesome tale: someone had been killed… but by who? Ten eerie suspects appeared, moving ominously toward the participants with unsettling stares. It was now up to the players to crack the case. Clues were hidden, suspects needed to be grilled, and nothing was quite what it seemed. The night was packed with brain-teasing challenges: piecing together torn-up photos, looking for the murder weapon, translating secret wills, and much more! Even as the halls went darker and the tension spiked, the participants tackled every twist and turn with smiles and teamwork.

After plenty of clever sleuthing, the mystery came to a close, leaving everyone buzzing with curiosity about who the real culprit was—is it the mistress? The maid? The butler? Or even the victim’s wife?? And just when you thought the night couldn’t get any wilder—it did. Finished with the main game, the event continued with “Find Your Twins,” a game that paired up lookalikes for a fun meet-and-greet!

The evening wrapped up with a photo session, where participants snapped memories with their friends and the organizing committee, including the capture of group photos. What a night! Hats off to cohort 2024 for pulling off this fantastic (and slightly spooky) experience. Here’s to many more unforgettable moments!

Samhain, which is pronounced sow-in, is of Gaelic origin which means “summer’s end”. It was a pagan celebration marking the end of the summer and welcoming the harvest of the new year. The Celts believed that during Samhain, the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest, and spirits are able to roam about the land of the living. That is why people would often light bonfires and wear costumes to disguise themselves as harmful spirits and in turn avoid harm.

As Halloween evolved from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, it merged with Christian traditions during the 9th century. Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as All Saints’ Day, and the night before became All Hallows’ Eve, later known as Halloween. Over time, especially in North America, Halloween shifted from a formal occasion to a festive occasion. Traditions like carving pumpkins, dressing up in costumes, and trick-or-treating became popular, making it a widely celebrated cultural event focused on fun, creativity, and all things spooky.
