If you’re a fan of Edgar Allan Poe’s gothic fantasy literature chance are you probably already read The Masque of the Red Death. Many Interpret it as attempts to identify the true nature of the eponymous disease. If the gothic maestro still lives today He might write that short story of silent killer disease is about Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA). Most people know it as a stroke.

In Indonesia, there are more than 150 thousand cases of stroke per year. That considered an enormous number. Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) not only happens specifically to elderly but also to a youngster. And what’s even more concerning is that the number of youngsters who have a stroke keeps increasing every year.

A cerebrovascular accident is a brain damage condition due to interruption of its blood supply either from obstruction of the arteries known as Ischemic stroke or hemorrhage causing by arteries rupture this one is called Hemorrhagic stroke. Without blood, the brain will not get oxygen and nutrients, so cells in some areas of the brain will die. This condition causes parts of the body controlled by the damaged area of the brain to not function properly. in some fatal cases, it leads to death.

Stroke usually occurs in the elderly, commonly Hemorrhagic stroke due to high blood pressure or hypertension. That does not rule out the possibility of stroke occur in youngsters. This is due to several risk factors, among others are health, lifestyle, and genetic.

Health factors, which include: hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol level, obesity, and sleep apnea. While lifestyle factors include: smoking, lack of exercise or physical activity, drug abuse, and alcohol addiction. Heredity or genetic factor: People who have family members who have had a stroke are at high risk of experiencing the same disease as well.

Stroke or CVA in youngsters more common in males than females, The reason is that females at a productive age or a young age still produce the hormone estrogen which naturally makes arteries walls better. So it doesn’t easily rupture or clogged.

For the preventive measure, can you do such as :

  1. Regular exercise for at least 20 – 30 minutes per day. You can choose sports that you like, such as walking, running, cycling, swimming, yoga, and other sports. Two birds in one stone right? Fun and healthy at the same time.
  2. This one is a triple threat, Delicious, nutritious and healthy. A healthy diet, which is eating balanced nutritious foods, such as vegetables and fruits to sustain your body health.
  3. You all better say a big NO to this one: Smoking, Alcohol, and drug abuse. Avoid it at any cost!
  4. Routinely monitoring your blood pressure and check your health conditions with the doctor.

In Edgar Allan Poe’s fictional gothic short story Prince Prospero can not avoid His ill-fated doomed. But with smart thinking, wiser choice, a healthy lifestyle, less stress, and fun workout or exercising We can beat the Red Death, we can beat Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) known commonly as stroke.
