i3L Science Competition – Lomba Peneliti Belia (LPB) is a research competition for junior and senior high school students in Indonesia run Center of Young Scientist (CYS). LPB Regional takes place every year in several provinces, districts, cities through various partnerships, now there are up to 10 LPB in Indonesia. This year, Lomba Peneliti Belia was successfully held by CYS in collaboration with Indonesia International Institute for Life Sciences (i3L).  The LPB regional competition divides the categorization into 4 topics that can be selected by participants such as Physics, Life Science, Environmental Science, Computer Science and Mathematics. By 4 of the topics, there will be 3 winners who receive gold, silver and bronze medals who will be send to Jakarta to compete in LPB national competition in i3L Campus on 16 – 18 November and they will also represent Indonesia at the International Conference of Young Scientists 2018 (ICYS) in Serbia and Asia Pasific Conference of Young Scientists 2018 (APCYS) in Thailand.

Through this collaboration, i3L and CYS held the LPB competition in several cities in Indonesia in order to encourage and support young students interest in life science area. This time, the LPB competition managed to held in East Java at Gedung Dinas Pendidikan Jawa Timur on 28 October 2017. On this competition, students are able to put their ideas into poster and present it to judges and expertise that are related in life science industries. The posters are divided by 4 topics which are Physics, Life Science, Environmental Science, Computer Science and Mathematics. With the number of 120 participants, LPB research competition in Jawa Tengah managed to get the winners from each topics.

The 1st winners from LPB Jawa Timur came from different schools with remarkable various of poster showcase. Pyshics topic got a winner from Cita Hati East Campus student poster titled A New Model of Temperature Measuring Device for Flat-Surfaced Solids. Another participant from Spins International School managed to become a winner with their poster titled Utilization of “Gabah” (skin/shell of rice) as a raw material for the making of paper in Environmental Science topic.

From SMA 6 Surabaya, the winner from Computer Science and Mathematics topics came from Beryllyan Hacika Putra and Ilyas Yudhistira Kurniawan with their poster titled Smart Saving System (S3), an idea to eliminate the problem about money saving. This system will create friendly budget machine that makes people remember the target about money saving. The objectives of this system are to create the money saving box system therefore people will be able to check how much money inside without opening it. Also, this system will make people feel triggered to take their saving for buying what they really need instead of what they want.

Our purposes from this competition are the students will be able to demonstrate their ideas that are related in life sciences and show the importance of science to the future development through their creativity and innovation.
